5 simple ways to make talking about mental health less awkward

Five tips to make mental health conversations at work easier.

While R U OK? Day serves as an annual reminder to check in on colleagues, many of us still feel awkward when chatting about mental health. Want to change that? Here are five simple things we can all do.

1. Get to know your colleagues and check in regularly

The better we know someone, the easier it is to pick up the signs when they aren’t quite themselves. Get to know what’s happening for them outside of work and what they regularly do for self-care. This can provide a natural and gentle way to check in and begin a conversation about mental health.

2. Share how you are feeling

By openly discussing your own mental health you can break down the barriers. Being the boss doesn’t mean you can’t be vulnerable. By prioritising self-care and taking a mental health day when you need one, you will help destigmatise mental health and normalise positive preventative behaviours.

3. Take a moment for yourself

Before having a chat, take a moment just for yourself. A few long, slow, deep breaths can instantly calm your nervous system. When you are more relaxed, it will also help relax the person you are speaking with, making it easier to have a meaningful conversation.

4. Forget about fixing everything

Your role is not to jump in and problem-solve. In fact, the best thing you can do is listen. Simply being heard and understood is extremely powerful. It can be helpful to know what resources are available and be able to refer a colleague to professional support.

5. Don’t worry about saying the wrong thing

Too often we avoid conversations about mental health, simply because we are worried about saying the wrong thing. Bravely having that chat is always better than staying silent. You needn’t have the training of a psychologist for your concern and actions to be life-saving.
